Menopur (Menotropin) in Fertility Treatments

Menopur, aka Menotropin, is a key medication in various fertility treatments including IVF, IUI, Egg freezing and Egg donation. It is a combination of hormones (FSH or follicle-stimulating hormone and LH or luteinizing hormone) derived from human urine, specifically designed to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs for retrieval.

Menopur Administration in Fertility Treatments:

Mainly administered via subcutaneous (SQ) injection, Menopur is essential for ovarian stimulation. It is typically used in combination with other fertility drugs (like Gonal-F, Follistim, Omnitrope) to enhance ovarian response and increase the success rate of egg retrieval. The treatment typically starts at the beginning of your ovarian stimulation cycle or IUI cycle and continues until the follicles are appropriately developed, as confirmed by ultrasound and hormone levels.

Monitoring and Adjusting Treatment:

Regular monitoring during Menopur treatment involves blood tests and ultrasound exams to assess ovarian response. Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on these results to maximize efficacy and minimize risks, such as Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS).

Common Side Effects:

Menopur can cause several side effects, the most common being:

  • Headaches and mood swings

  • Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site

  • Abdominal bloating and mild pain

  • Nausea and fatigue

Menopur Fun Fact: A distinctive aspect of Menopur is that it is one of the few fertility medications that contain both FSH and LH, which are purified from the urine of postmenopausal women. This unique source makes Menopur especially effective in stimulating the ovaries in a more balanced and natural manner compared to synthetic hormones.
