Ovarian Stimulation and Trigger Shots in Fertility Treatments

Trigger shots, crucial in fertility treatments such as IUI, IVF, Egg freezing, and Egg donation, involve hormones like human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists. These injections are essential for the final maturation and timely release of eggs. At CNS, our home fertility nurses, expertly administer these injections, essential for the synchronization required in fertility procedures.

Ovarian Stimulation Across Fertility Treatments: Ovarian stimulation is a fundamental phase in various fertility treatments, utilizing daily hormonal injections such as Gonal-F, Follistim, and Menopur, typically lasting 10 to 14 days. These medications stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. CNS Storks, your home fertility nursing team, provides daily in-home administration of these medications, while your fertility clinic conducts regular monitoring through blood tests and ultrasound exams to adjust dosages as necessary.

Trigger Shot Administration: Trigger shots are normally ordered in the evening and require precise timing. Administered 36 hours before procedures like egg retrieval in IVF or Egg Freezing, egg collection for donation, or prior to IUI, trigger shots such as high-dose Lupron and/or hCG (e.g., Pregnyl, Novarel, Ovidrel) are precisely timed to optimize the success of these treatments. CNS nurses arrive early to prepare and administer these injections exactly in the critical time window prescribed by your fertility clinic provider to maximize the effectiveness of your treatment.

Cabergoline and OHSS Prevention: In addition to administering trigger shots, CNS home fertility nurses provides extensive education on the importance of medications like Cabergoline, also known by its trade name Dostinex. Cabergoline is often prescribed to prevent ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), a potential side effect of fertility treatments. It works by inhibiting the release of prolactin, which can contribute to OHSS. Cabergoline is usually ordered if a patient is at risk of developing OHSS, particularly after the administration of hCG trigger shots.

Understanding OHSS: Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) is a condition that can occur when too many hormones are administered to stimulate the ovaries. It typically happens late in ovarian stimulation or after the hCG trigger shot and can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, nausea and vomiting. Mild to moderate OHSS occurs relatively frequently in stimulated cycles, affecting patients in varying degrees. Your CNS nursing team will monitor you for signs of OHSS and educate you on how to manage symptoms, ensuring safety and comfort throughout the treatment process.
